The Centre for Law as Protection is dedicated to the study of the idea of protection, to shaping policy, and to developing legal tools to enhance security in the face of the many threats the world is experiencing. As part of its mission, the Centre promotes original research that studies the idea of protection, identifies what protection from these diverse threats means, and contributes to the legal tools that protection requires.

The Centre is pleased to announce its inaugural Student Research Competition. The competition is open to students currently enrolled in an undergraduate or postgraduate degree in Law or a related field, including students enrolled in research degrees. Submissions must address a topic that falls within the research mission of the Centre, so as to advance our understanding of the protection of humans, non-human animals, and the environment through legal means. The winner of the competition will receive a prize of AU$1,000.

Submission process: Submissions must be in English, and must be of a length and in a style appropriate for publication in an academic law journal. Submissions should be sent as an email attachment, from an institutional email address, to law-as-protection@deakin.edu.au. Submissions should identify which of the Centre’s thematic research streams they are aligned to. The four research streams are set out here.

Deadline: The due date for submissions in 23:59 Australian Eastern Daylight Time, October 23rd.
