The War on Drugs: A Global Failure

Kate Seear’s TEDx Talk

Around 1 in 2 people have tried an illicit drug in their lifetime.

For decades, powerful world leaders have told us that the only way to stop drug use is through a ‘war on drugs’ and the people who use them. But is it working? How do we judge effectiveness? Because all wars have consequences. Which ones are we willing to tolerate?

These questions have come into sharp focus in recent weeks, after boat strikes in the Caribbean, and America’s dramatic capture of Venezuela’s President.

In Kate’s talk, she tells us a different story about the consequences of the war on drugs. It’s a story about a small tree frog in Colombia. Its future is bound up with the war on drugs. The war connects us to it. It connects us all. And it affects us all.
