This Melbourne-based forum brings together practitioners, community organisations, policymakers and researchers to explore survivor-centred approaches to human trafficking, with a particular focus on the experiences of North Korean escapee women.

A central feature of the event will be testimony from a North Korean survivor of trafficking; a rare opportunity to engage directly with lived experience that is not often accessible in Australian policy and practice settings. Simultaneous interpretation will be provided.

The event forms part of a broader Australia–Korea collaboration supported by the Australia-Korea Foundation, in partnership with the Database Center for North Korean Human Rights (NKDB), Seoul.

The forum will include:

  • Presentation of research findings from NKDB on trafficking and post-escape vulnerabilities
  • Testimony from a North Korean survivor of trafficking
  • Practitioner responses and moderated discussion
  • Opportunities for cross-sector dialogue and networking

The aim is to create a space where organisations working directly with trafficked and vulnerable populations can:

  • share insights and experiences
  • compare approaches
  • strengthen coordination and understanding of best practice

This event is intended for:

  • practitioners working in migration, trafficking, and modern slavery
  • community and civil society organisations
  • policymakers and government representatives
  • researchers and students with an interest in human rights and gender-based violence
