We would like to congratulate Joses Teo for his outstanding academic performance in in Data Law, Privacy and Cybercrime (JD & LLB).
Joses was the recipient of the best student in Data Law, Privacy and Cybercrime (JD & LLB) at the recent Deakin Law School Academic Excellence Prize Ceremony. This prize, sponsored by the Centre for Law as Protection, recognises outstanding academic performance in in Data Law, Privacy and Cybercrime (JD & LLB). The award was bestowed on Joses on 12 May.
In undertaking the unit, Joses focused his research on the use of facial recognition technology (FRT) in commercial and retail settings, and the challenges it presents for contemporary privacy and data regulation. His research explored how Australia’s privacy framework is intentionally technology-neutral and principles-based, providing flexibility to respond to evolving technologies. However, this approach has also attracted criticism for being ill-suited to highly invasive surveillance technologies such as FRT, where traditional concepts of notice, consent and individual choice may provide limited protection. Joses’ work explored the tension between rapid technological advancement and the comparatively slow pace of legislative reform. While technology-specific regulation risks becoming outdated as innovation evolves, broad principles-based regulation may struggle to adequately address emerging risks. His research ultimately considered how legal frameworks can better balance technological advancement, commercial innovation, and the protection of privacy and personal data
