Australia-Indonesia Institute Veterinary Education Workshop in Lombok, Indonesia, 25 April 2026
The final part of our Australia-Indonesia Institute funded project ‘Animal Welfare in One Health: An Indonesian-Australian Education Collaboration’, was successfully delivered in Mataram, Lombok on 25 April 2026. A team from Murdoch University and Sintesia Animalia Indonesia met with local veterinarians and students from Mandalika University veterinary school for a day long workshop on ‘Refinements to spey clinics’. This collaborative workshop built on our 2025 lecture series at 3 Indonesian veterinary schools (Airlangga University, Surabaya, West Java Province; Udayana University, Denpasar, Bali Province; and Mandalika University, Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara Province) to provide targeted, outcomes-focused veterinary education using a decolonised approach that centres on local needs, knowledge and experience. With over thirty attendees, veterinarians from Murdoch University collaborated with the Chief Veterinary Officer of Sintesia Animalia Indonesia to discuss infield anaesthesia, preparations for surgery, analgesia, quality of life assessment and euthanasia. There were interactive presentations and practical demonstrations where attendees discussed their spey clinic practices and identified areas for refinement.
The workshop contributed to the project goals of supporting both veterinary students and graduates, with content that included Indonesian animal welfare law and policy, ethical treatment of animals, and the role of animal welfare in preventing disease and supporting sustainable trade and development. The importance of animal welfare in the broader One Health and Welfare context was also highlighted. The workshop consolidated new relationships between all parties, which will facilitate ongoing regional cooperation in animal welfare and veterinary education.
