This research theme focuses on protecting humans, animals, and the environment from the harm that is caused by government policies and other forms of organised violence. This includes military and paramilitary violence, terrorism, pervasive surveillance, counterterrorism measures, and a range of criminal and administrative control mechanisms that impact a variety of human interests. Through several research projects we explore the meaning of protection in this space, identify a range of harms, and propose pathways to mitigate them. Our research contributes to improving government policies through engagement with government bodies (including DFAT and the ADF) and with international organisations (such as the UN and the ICRC).
